TODD TERRY

Grammy Award nominated DJ/Producer Todd Terry has been engulfed in dance music since he first started listening to European dance music records while growing up in Brooklyn. Already devoted to turntables, he heard something different in those tracks, and he “went for the difference. I never got a break in New York, but England happened right away, so I catered to them.” In any event, the Todd Terry sound was born.

By 1988, Todd Terry hit big in England and Europe, and his notoriety was making its way back to the U.S. In addition to DJ appearances, Todd was cutting his classic underground tracks A Day In The Life, Weekend, and Can You Party, released under monikers such as the Todd Terry Project, House Of Gypsies, and Royal House, all considered essential and ground breaking.

Todd is one of the world’s most celebrated figures in dance music. With almost two decades of dance floor domination under Todd’s belt the quality of his productions goes from strength to strength. Welcome to the church of house music presided over by Todd the God. Are you a believer?

GORGON CITY

Having established themselves as one of the most in-demand acts in the industry, Gorgon City have enjoyed stellar success over the past 5-years thanks to their unique blend of bass-driven house music and addictive vocals. The UK duo, consisting of Kye Gibbon and Matt Robson-Scott, have developed a huge international presence, garnering over 676 million combined streams to date, and playing to enormous crowds of dedicated fans around the world.

Following their debut single releases on Black Butter Records in 2012, things went into overdrive in 2014 with the release of their debut album ‘Sirens’ (70,000 UK copies sold) which also birthed their huge single ‘Ready For Your Love,’ ft. MNEK (64 million Spotify streams), peaking at #4 on the UK chart. The album marked a pivotal moment in the duo’s career and spawned 5 more UK hit singles through tracks like ‘Here For You’, ‘Unmissable’ and ‘Go All Night’ (feat Jennifer Hudson), which all achieved Top #20 positions in the UK Singles Chart.

The pair have continued to thrive in recent times with their recent Duke Dumont & NAATIONS collaboration ‘Real Life’, providing the soundtrack of summer 2017 from the UK to Ibiza and beyond. Equally adept at catering to the underground scene, Gorgon City have showcased their prowess for more rugged, minimalistic beats, through their own club-focused REALM imprint, which also housed releases such as ‘Grooves On The Vinyl’, ‘Motorola’ and BBC Radio 1 specialist anthem ‘Primal Call.’

Recently delivering their brand-new ‘Escape’ album – featuring singles such as ‘One Last Song’ with Yungen & JP Cooper, ‘Go Deep’ with Kamille and Ghosted, and D Double E collaboration, ‘Hear That’ – The release followed Gorgon City’s recent sold out UK and Europe ‘Kingdom’ tour and accompanied two sell-out album launch parties (Brooklyn and London) on both sides of the Atlantic; a testament to the huge worldwide following the duo have amassed. Performing at various iconic venues globally, the pair have sold out headline shows at the likes of Brixton Academy, Amnesia, Ushuaia, Sziget Festival, Splash House in Palm Springs, and CRSSD Festival.

With Gorgon City’s well established Kingdom Radio show broadcast to over 14 million live listeners, the pair also recently announced a wealth of dates across the UK and US during their ‘Escape’ Tour, with Matt and Kye embark on a huge run of performances at the likes of London’s iconic Printworks venue, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and many more.

Undoubtedly one of dance music’s most popular, and fastest growing, acts in the world, Gorgon City continue their meteoric rise heading into 2019 and beyond.

SHADOW CHILD

2022 sees Shadow Child celebrate 10 years of turning heads with a genre-bending catalogue of game changing music and DJ sets. The celebrations include a huge resurgence of his lockdown release ‘Space Riot’, championed by Peggy Gou, a debut on Franky Wah’s brand new Shen Records, a return to Pets Recordings with Rave-hero Mark Archer and a throwback Breakbeat-Hardcore release in the shape of the ‘Empire EP’, on the prolific and ground-breaking Time is Now label. As if that wasn’t enough, a spellbinding return to Dirtybird (where it all began in 2012), collaborating on a slice of powerfully uplifting Techno with Claude Vonstroke caps things off amongst other works and remixes besides.

With hugely successful studio productions and remixes, often fusing early House & Rave with today’s sound, he’s famed for his dynamic and carefully curated musical direction as both a DJ and producer. Historically, labels such as Shall Not Fade, Hot Creations, E-beamz, Unknown to the Unknown and Ovum have all helped tell the Shadow Child story and the most famous of his official remixes for Hot Natured, AlunaGeorge, Future Sound of London, Disclosure and Mary J. Blige have cemented Shadow Child as one of the most individual and positively unpredictable producers out there, building an insatiably large fan-base in the process. His Polymod moniker has also seen releases on Dusky’s 17 Steps and Sasha’s Last Night on Earth which included teaming up with the man himself on ‘Full Circle’.

Shadow Child’s label Food Music is a mainstay in House too and celebrates 10 years this December since the release of his own ‘23’. Aside from supporting both upcoming artists and the established, an acclaimed reworks project has seen him pull together official remasters & brand-new remixes of defining classic tracks. NJOI, Zero B, SL2, Xpansions and Bump have all featured with reworks not only by himself, but Krystal Klear, Pete Cannon, Rebūke, Jerome Hill, Chambray and many, many more.

Here's to 10 more.

SAM DIVINE

A born entertainer with a burning desire to play music to people around the world, Sam Divine’s enigmatic sets are an effortless schooling in pure, unadulterated house. From her early days as the sole member of the Defected street team in Ibiza to fronting their radio show and now headlining some of the world’s biggest clubs and festivals, The First Lady of Defected, has become an intrinsic part of the UK house music scene.

The seeds of Sam’s DJ career can be traced back to a pair of belt drive turntables and a battered Numark mixer set up in her Mum’s shed; a pirate radio show broadcast from her bedroom using ‘borrowed’ equipment from the local college and MSN Messenger, and time spent expanding her musical knowledge working at Spin Central in her hometown of Weston-super-Mare and Chemical Records in Bristol.

A chance encounter with then Defected Radio host, Aaron Ross, in Notting Hill in the early 00s, led Sam to Ibiza where she quickly became an integral figure in the West End. Since then she’s played at some of the island’s biggest clubs year upon year, holding down residencies at Pacha, Mambo, Amnesia, Eden and Ushuaïa, and sharing space with some of the greatest names in dance including Frankie Knuckles, Master’s At Work, MK, DJ Spen, KiNK, Sandy Rivera and The Shapeshifters.

Sam launched her own highly successful imprint, DVINE Sounds, in 2015. To date, the label has seen 58 releases, helping to propel talented up and coming artists into the spotlight. Her own foray into production began with a remix of the classic garage anthem ‘Flowers’ that proved a hit, reaching the top spots on Traxsource and Beatport. A remix of Amira’s 1997 garage hit, ‘My Desire’, followed in 2019. In 2020 DVINE celebrated its fifth birthday with the label evolving as a brand with events, boat parties, a stage at We Are FSTVL and a return to ADE.

2019 was a year of firsts for Sam with her debut appearance at London’s Printworks venue, where she returned on New Year’s Day alongside her Defected crew. In September she was invited by Radio 1 tastemaker Pete Tong to record a coveted Essential Mix – a true marker of how far her career has come. 2019 also marked Divine’s first Mixmag Lab NYC set. All this on top of touring globally, playing 21 festivals worldwide, an epic gig at the top of London’s iconic Tower Bridge and raising over £40,000 for Breast Cancer Research through her charity D-Vita. December also saw the return of 2019’s sold-out Openers tour with Sam playing all night long across two weekends in December.

Despite spending the majority of 2020 in lockdown, Sam took the bull by the horns and excelled with her livestreams with her infectious energy, reaching her ever-expanding fanbase from all corners of the globe. Sam sold out all the socially distanced parties she played throughout the Summer, one of which sold out in a record time of 7 minutes. Sam shows no sign of slowing down in 2021 with a number of Defected parties already in the diary, a return to the festival circuit, an Australasian tour and solo tours throughout North America and Canada. 2021 also brings new music in collaboration with Australian DJ and producer, Kormak, as well as a new EP on her own label. With her passion and dedication to her music beyond doubt, Sam Divine is a musician who will continue to evolve and grow.

JUNIOR SANCHEZ

As one of the world’s most respected and innovative DJs, Junior Sanchez has remained at the forefront of house music since the ‘90s. But throughout his three-decade-long career, Sanchez has continued to challenge himself—becoming a versatile producer, a hands-on label executive, and an inspiring entrepreneur along the way. Above all, Sanchez’s enthusiasm for his craft, and his passion to share it with others, is present in all of his endeavors.

Although Sanchez’s story begins in the most ordinary of places—suburban New Jersey—his rise to fame was anything but. The youngest of six, Sanchez was raised on his family’s diverse record collection. While his Brazilian mother enjoyed a steady dose of Latin music, his siblings each had their own favorites: from ELO and Fleetwood Mac to Slick Rick and The Smiths. Sanchez embraced it all. But when he discovered house music—a relatively young genre that sprung from the ashes of disco—it resonated with him on a new level.

Sanchez developed his talents on a makeshift rig at home and immersed himself in New York City’s vibrant club scene. By his early teens, he was DJing regularly at Peter Gatien’s Club USA and Limelight. Balancing high school with residencies, Sanchez signed his first record deal at 15. A few years later, he established Cube Recordings, where he released records from the likes of Rhythm Masters, Stuart Price, and Sébastien Léger. There, he also co-produced Felix da Housecat’s landmark electroclash album, Kittenz and Thee Glitz.

The prodigious DJ not only won the respect of house music’s elders but also of a new generation of stars, including Armand van Helden, who took Sanchez under his wing. Together, they founded Da Mongaloids—a global collective of DJs that featured such high-profile names as Todd Terry; Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christ; Roger Sanchez; Laidback Luke; DJ Sneak; and Basement Jaxx’s Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe. Aiming to create “The Wu-Tang Clan of House Music,” Sanchez was the youngest of the group—and the most enthusiastic. “I recruited all of these people,” he recalls. “We started re-mixing each other and appearing on each other’s records. There was a lot of unity.”

The collective also birthed a project between Sanchez, DJ Sneak, and Roger Sanchez called The S-Men. The multi-generational trio put together an enthralling live act featuring six turntables, a sampler, and a keyboard. While turntablism of this level had been seen in hip-hop, it was revolutionary in the world of house music. The S-Men made their debut at London’s 1997 Tribal Gathering, opening for Kraftwerk. A little over two decades later, the group thrilled fans with a reunion. Today, they continue to work together.

Da Mongaloids, meanwhile, never officially parted ways, but members became increasingly busy with their exploding careers. Sanchez was no exception.

Over the years, the New York-based artist has enjoyed regular club appearances in Ibiza, Las Vegas, and Miami, and played for thousands of fans at Electric Daisy Carnival, Ultra Music Festival, Winter Music Conference, and Amsterdam Dance Event. He has also released dozens of singles and EPs across such esteemed labels as Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, and Defected, plus two full-length albums: 2011’s Seize the Fewcha and 2017’s Under the Influence. The latter title, which pays homage to house music’s pioneers, was released under Sanchez’s Brobot Records.

Established in 2013 in partnership with Steve Angello’s Size Records, Brobot offered Sanchez the freedom to release his own records, as well as more experimental music from his peers. Additionally, the label gave him an opportunity to mentor and showcase a variety of rising, young talent.

Early on, Sanchez also pursued a career as a producer, remixer, and songwriter, which allowed him to work with a broad spectrum of artists. “Dance music is such a huge part of my musical DNA, but there’s so much more to me too,” he shares. “When I began making house music, I did it because I loved it—but I never turned my back on other types of music.”

Those sessions helped him grow exponentially as an artist. “I wanted to put myself out there and learn how to work with a band or a singer-songwriter. I had to do that in order to be better at what I do,” says Sanchez, whose roster of collaborators includes Madonna, Ariana Grande, Good Charlotte, Katy Perry, A Tribe Called Quest, Ima Robot, Morningwood, Teyana Taylor, and Azealia Banks, with whom he co-wrote and produced the highly-acclaimed viral hit, “Anna Wintour.”

That endless love of learning sparked one of Sanchez’s newest projects, KULTUR: a label, events, and lifestyle brand with an educational focus. Co-founded in 2020 with the Toronto-based DJ and producer Demiur, KULTUR was created to “keep the narrative of house music alive, so that kids know where their favorite dance music came from,” explains Sanchez.

Those origins began in the underground—and particularly the marginalized communities—of American cities. “House music will always have its roots within the Black, Latinx, straight, and LGBTQ+ cultures of New York and Chicago,” notes Sanchez. “It came from people who needed to escape their daily lives.” Sanchez is further exploring these foundational themes in an upcoming solo project, which is currently in the works with producer Dallas Austin.

Today, Sanchez feels a responsibility to preserve that original spirit while also looking ahead; empowering a new generation of artists to shape the future of dance music. “Everyone should win within this culture—whether they’re underground or mainstream; a singer, a songwriter, or a DJ who makes beats. There’s room for everyone.”

It’s certainly a full-circle moment for the busy artist and father as he enters the next decade of his career. “I always say that we’re all pixels in this amazing story of house music; we’ve all played a role,” he reflects. “I’m so grateful that I was part of the picture as a kid—and am still a part of this ‘painting’ that we’re all creating.”
